The Upper Mustang Trek, organized by Multipeak Adventure, is one of the most unique and culturally rich treks in Nepal. Often called the “Forbidden Kingdom,” Mustang remained closed to outsiders until the early 1990s, preserving its ancient Tibetan culture, monasteries, and traditional way of life. This 17-day journey offers trekkers a rare opportunity to explore the high-altitude desert landscapes of Upper Mustang, dramatic cliffs, narrow canyons, and remote villages where life has remained unchanged for centuries.
The trek begins with an international arrival in Kathmandu, followed by a domestic flight to Pokhara and a drive to Jomsom. From there, the adventure officially starts on foot, following the Kali Gandaki River into the Mustang region. Trekkers will pass through the historic villages of Kagbeni, Jong, Tange, Yara, and Charang, each offering unique insights into Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient fortresses, mani walls, prayer flags, and traditional mud-brick houses.
The highlight of the trek is the capital, Lhomantang, where the royal palace, ancient monasteries, and narrow alleys reveal the fascinating history of the Lo Kingdom. A high-altitude day hike to Korala border near Tibet offers panoramic Himalayan views, including peaks like Annapurna II, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri, and the chance to experience the stark, arid beauty of Mustang’s trans-Himalayan landscape.
This trek also provides a remarkable contrast between the lush lower valleys of Jomsom and the barren, high desert plateaus of Mustang. Trekkers encounter isolated highland villages, yak pastures, and dramatic cliff formations that make every day a visual and cultural discovery. Proper acclimatization is incorporated throughout the itinerary, including rest days and short hikes to surrounding monasteries and high points.
Throughout the journey, trekkers enjoy comfortable accommodation in tea houses, lodges, and mountain camps, with full-board meals included during trekking days. The combination of natural beauty, Tibetan Buddhist culture, historic sites, and high-altitude adventure makes the Upper Mustang Trek a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
By the end of this trek, adventurers not only achieve the satisfaction of traversing remote Himalayan landscapes but also gain a deep appreciation for the traditional lifestyle, rich culture, and extraordinary geography of one of Nepal’s most untouched regions. The journey concludes with a return to Kathmandu via Pokhara, giving trekkers time to relax, reflect, and enjoy the city’s cultural and historical landmarks before departure.
